Painting Gems
As much as I love Industrial Design, it's always fun to go and explore other things. Which is probably why I like to choose a bunch of different things for electives at uni as opposed to using those elective units to sub-major in something.
This semester I am taking Illustration 1 (click for a subject description). Our first assignment has a bit of a live brief in that we have an ACTUAL CLIENT! Whether our work goes to print is up to them. But yes we are illustrating for 2ser. Here are some photos of how that's going.

All in all I am quite loving this subject. So relieving and relaxing compared to everything else I have to do (which I haven't really posted about but might later). Can't believe I can sit and paint for hours and call it work. SO much fun! :)
Will probably update on how it's going sometime next week. Just over a week left to work on it! Till then!
Ciao!

My blog has a new URL!
juliesdesignadventures.blogspot.com
I thought it would be a bit more appropriate for the purpose of this blog being a design blog. Hope to be able to show more projects and process on here for a more professional... thing (biggest mind blank)
Anyway have a GREAT Easter everyone! Here is an origami rabbit I prepared earlier :)

Just a little Christmas crafting
Yeah so I am being awesome and POSTING all my Christmas cards this year for the very first time. YAY for snail mail! This is because
Anyway, I don't know if anyone still reads this blog. BUT I miss it so I hope to be posting a bit more this holidays. :)
♥ Julie
- I haven't given Christmas cards in a while and I kind of miss it
- I can't see everyone I would like to give them to (I also won't be bothered to visit everyone individually, mostly cause I would have to use public transport to get everywhere)
- It takes less time to go to the post office once then see everyone.
- AND I'm not going to be in the state over Christmas/New Years :)
Not to mention that mail is FUN! :)
And now me being, well me, I thought that I would make my own Christmas cards!
The design and all are pretty much done just need to finish the last half. THEN I have to make the envelopes...
Just some of my materials
I really need to get these done before the week is out. Need to post them before the end of the week. I leave for Melbourne on FRIDAY!!!
CONNECTOR PEN! Just one..
I suppose I could post them from there seeing as domestic postage will cost the same but I would like it to arrive around Christmas time (if I posted it today it would probably all get mailed out by Friday). Just hope my friend gets hers before she leaves the country for half a year!!
just a little preview which in my opinion actually gives it away...
Anyway, I don't know if anyone still reads this blog. BUT I miss it so I hope to be posting a bit more this holidays. :)

just a little bit fancy..
Been practising hand lettering with the quill I got in Italy.
Don't know if I like the original or the rewritten on better..
YAY for procrastination! :)
With my quill and ink. First wrote on some scrap paper.
Rewrote it NOT on scrap paper and scanned, it bled a bit..
Don't know if I like the original or the rewritten on better..
YAY for procrastination! :)

UNI update!
Just a little update on what's been going on at uni recently.
Below you can see some cardboard coat hangers which we designed for our Structure, Form and Material in Industrial Design subject. We were asked to design and construct a coat hanger out of fashion card (or any lighter weight cardboard) which would be able to hold a 2.6kg winter coat. The photo below is a display of some of the designs from the course.
Level 6, Building 6, UTS
This was my design and was lucky enough to be chosen for showcase. Mine was the lightest on display (that had already been weighed) at only 21g, i think..
Next is from my Ergonomics class. We were asked to make up personas to test our interface designs on. This is one of the personas we had in my group which I made up. Her name is Chi Chi, a 70 year old retiree who spends her time making crafts which she sells at weekend markets around the city.
we had to cut up magazines and things to stick on paper to represent our personas. Definitely one of our funner classes this semester.
And alas I am on my mid semester break with lots of work do to before the break is over..

Business card?
If you saw my post before about the Golden Tickets I'm selling on Fiverr...
Yeah I don't know where I was going with that sentence but the point is, I thought I would design myself a business card to post with the tickets..
So here it is!

Front
Back
I made a little thank you card too! :)
I don't have them printed professionally.. I just print it on normal copy paper and stick the two sides together.
I'm heaps pro!

I'm selling golden tickets for $5!
Based on the golden tickets in 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory', both the text on the front and back are customisable; 'company' name (fake or otherwise), the prize (if you don't want to see Willy Wonka's factory) and the terms and conditions on the back.
If want my to make you some of these babies just head to fiverr.com
Buy 5 of the same print and get 1 FREE!

GAH!
Slight pause from my usual (but by no means frequent) designy posts..
TUMBLR IS GAY AND WONT LET ME POST SHIT (excuse my french)
But yeah. back at uni, one week has gone by. And there is one way I know I'm REALLY back at uni, I'm cutting up cardboard on the floor again! HOORAH! Not really. I have having limited supplies of stuff. I need to go by more cardboard. I always feel bad for 'wasting' resources when im testing when I know I dont have much of the material. Especially when I can see the amount of it reducing as I go. I'm one of those stingy, eco people. I dont like to spend money and I dont like seeing material going to 'waste'.
In my mind good prototypes are perfect in terms of that design. I hate seeing things not work. i hate making mistakes. Everything needs to work. Every bit thought out thoroughly.
I hate being a perfectionist sometimes. Need to stop thinking and just do. In the words of Nike.
Oh and I still havent found something to write with... but for once i know where my stanley knife is.

You and me
For graphics. Had to send a letter of sorts to someone. My message was
"Dear Einstein I think you're awesome."
We had to convey this message using only "you", "&" and "me" and paper manipulation. This is the end result.
The brain was a pain to cut out, I spent WAY too much effort on a workshop which wasn't getting marked.

Productivity
Well I am actually being a little bit productive today. Currently working on the cards my mother asked for, commissioned work thank goodness! It's taking SO long though and I'm making a big mess out of the computer table and the kitchen bench.
My computer desk. Look it's my blog! *pointing at monitor* And look my DIANA Mini!
The kitchen bench and my big pile of coloured paper and scraps.
Little cut out shapes for the cards. No I did not cut them out individually with scissors, I used one of those hole punchers.
The original design plan. The end result is practically the same but you get the idea.
My workspace on the kitchen bench while gluing it all together.
Cards drying on the side. Gluing 20 little pieces of paper into a circle is very time consuming work. But it looks good so I don't mind. I think the quickest I finished one card was in 15 minutes...
Of course I had to fit my little jellyfish in there somewhere and a little "handcrafted" note on the back, I'm branding.
And the finished product! :D
So I've made 6 cards and a lot of mess, won't cleaning be fun! But that's not all I did today. Visited my primary school because my sister was getting a "Gold Award" or something and my mum told my brother and I to go so that we could take pictures and picker her up from school. Also went to the shops after and I checked how much it would be to develop my film from my LOMO! It's about $8 at Big W so it is quite affordable, but I have no money right now. I just finished watching a whole bunch of videos from Forster, it's all so hilarious! I really do miss that place, it was so much fun.
Anyway I should clean up a bit of my mess now so that I don't sleep too late and end up being REALLY tired tomorrow. Got a big day ahead. Ice skating in the morning then a party in the evening! Should be heaps fun and I am looking forward to it. BUT I have no money and will have to go to the parents for some, hope they're feeling generous tomorrow morning!

i love...
wrapping presents.
To some, wrapping presents is a pain just to cover up a gift so hide its identity and to keep what's inside a bit of a surprise. But to me gift wrapping is just another creative outlet. I pride myself in taking out a bunch of paper, ribbons and strings and an assortment of other crafty bits and bobs and create a pretty outer casing to a gift.
Regardless of if it will later be destroyed by little hands or thrown in the garbage. As long as someone notices my handicraft and thinks "oh, that's nice!" that's my work done, even if they don't know it's my work. Even if no one seems to notice, my mum always appreciates my work! (That's another thing i love... my mother. But that should go without saying.) Well anyway here is a picture of a present I wrapped yesterday for my little cousin's first birthday.
Her party is on today. Right now actually but I stayed home to study. But how is study going? I'm writing this blog post aren't I!? Haha. I really should get on with that. I have english work awaiting me, so I shall stop now.
See you on the flip side!
