Painting Gems

As much as I love Industrial Design, it's always fun to go and explore other things. Which is probably why I like to choose a bunch of different things for electives at uni as opposed to using those elective units to sub-major in something.

This semester I am taking Illustration 1 (click for a subject description). Our first assignment has a bit of a live brief in that we have an ACTUAL CLIENT! Whether our work goes to print is up to them. But yes we are illustrating for 2ser. Here are some photos of how that's going.

Need to do some illustrations for this local radio station literally just outside uni.
Workspace 1
Painting scans

Rearrangement on Photoshop
Workspace 2
So as you can see, the concept I'm working from is 'the gems of radio'. Still need to do a lot more painting. Have 2 other iterations of this concept to paint up. Mostly just playing with rendering techniques at the moment. Using ink and watercolour!

All in all I am quite loving this subject. So relieving and relaxing compared to everything else I have to do (which I haven't really posted about but might later). Can't believe I can sit and paint for hours and call it work. SO much fun! :)

Will probably update on how it's going sometime next week. Just over a week left to work on it! Till then!

Ciao!

Holiday catch up

Also some of the stuff I did in the holidays after my last Christmas craft post. Pretty much just Christmas craft and things actually at Christmas (i.e. my cards and Christmas eve baking!)

So I finished painting and colouring my cards and FINALLY cut them all up!

20 self designed, handmade Christmas cards.
Little accident spilling a glass of water!!

The paper started curling!! *GASP* Don't worry I made spare cards.
Handmade envelopes with self designed address plates
I don't have a proper photo because I am silly and didn't think about that till after I posted and I cant be bothered looking for my spares to take a photo right now. So I am just borrowing a photo off my friend Rachel who took this and posted it on online after she got it.

ANWAY MOVING ON TO CHRISTMAS BAKING!
Our playground (my cousin & I)
We decided to make some gingerbread cookies.
YAY!!! Gingerstars :)

I really wanted to make a gingerbread house so I convinced my cousin to leave me some of the dough so I could make a mini one. Also decided to make a gingerbread man out of the leftover dough.
DECORATING! :)
CONSTRUCTION! This was actually really difficult because I couldn't be bothered to make actual icing so i was just using nutella to stick it all together.
YEWWW! Finished house!!
All snow dusted! With mister ginger bread :)
Pretty good for my first ever gingerbread house, no?
AND the back of the house
We arranged and dusted the gingerbread stars too! :)
And to give you a sense of scale... look how tiny it is! It was SO CUTE :)

Anyway, so that was some of my Christmas. Hope you enjoyed!

Julie.

Just a little Christmas crafting

Yeah so I am being awesome and POSTING all my Christmas cards this year for the very first time. YAY for snail mail! This is because

  1. I haven't given Christmas cards in a while and I kind of miss it
  2. I can't see everyone I would like to give them to (I also won't be bothered to visit everyone individually, mostly cause I would have to use public transport to get everywhere)
  3. It takes less time to go to the post office once then see everyone.
  4. AND I'm not going to be in the state over Christmas/New Years :)
Not to mention that mail is FUN! :)

And now me being, well me, I thought that I would make my own Christmas cards!

The design and all are pretty much done just need to finish the last half. THEN I have to make the envelopes...
Just some of my materials

I really need to get these done before the week is out. Need to post them before the end of the week. I leave for Melbourne on FRIDAY!!!

CONNECTOR PEN! Just one..

I suppose I could post them from there seeing as domestic postage will cost the same but I would like it to arrive around Christmas time (if I posted it today it would probably all get mailed out by Friday). Just hope my friend gets hers before she leaves the country for half a year!!
just a little preview which in my opinion actually gives it away...

Anyway, I don't know if anyone still reads this blog. BUT I miss it so I hope to be posting a bit more this holidays. :)

just a little bit fancy..

Been practising hand lettering with the quill I got in Italy.

With my quill and ink. First wrote on some scrap paper.

Rewrote it NOT on scrap paper and scanned, it bled a bit..

Don't know if I like the original or the rewritten on better..

YAY for procrastination! :)

SUBMITTED!

So I have FINALLY submitted my shirt design to Threadless!

Please support me and score (preferably a 5). Just click the link here. There is also a link on the left column.

I really need the money that I could receive from getting it printed so that I can make it to Spain for World Youth Day this year.

Thank you everyone! And don't forget to spread the word!

RED APE

So half way through my work experience week at Red Ape. Been doing a little design work for them but its thier down time so half the time the designers/illustrators just sit around LOOKING for work to do.

Anyway I am having a GREAT time. Ive been designing packaging, skateboards, doing some illustration and had a go and storyboard layouts. Also lots of image sourcing...

But here are some of the skateboard stuff I did today. The company want to design some cool skateboards for some reason..? Either for sale or just for some art to hang round the place but apparently the creative director has connections with people who can print for us..?

. I designed all the patterns and added one of the illustrators design. Top one is all mine. :)
Note that the illustrations on the bottom two arent mine. Copyright Jeremy Bondoc.

I would have more stuff but Illustrator CS5 files don't open to well on CS4.

Well hopefully I can get a copy of all my work by the end of the week to add to my portfolio!

Just a bit of brainstorming..

So my friend wanted someone to make a watermark for his phototography and I put my hand up to accept the challenge. He wanted something with his name (Adrian) or this innitials A, P & M.

And here is what I've been brainstorming so far..

Note that there is no gradual working down the page..

Will try and narrow that all down after some client feedback.

Uni work

Just realised that I could post some of my uni work in here (craft blog). Should be my craft and design blog.

ANYHOWS I've been doing some work on illustrator for uni. Have to render an iphone and make up an interface. So what I', doing for my interface is just the main page with all the apps and just make up some of my own apps to go on it.

Here is my lego app:

I want to change the background but I don't know what to.. If anyone has suggestions they are most welcome.

Where time takes us...

or me anyway. It amazes me how I start of doing something and find myself doing something else without even realising.

Today for example I was cleaning my room (for once), well more tidying or organising my mess. Then the next thing I know I've got my sketchbook out and the latest Ikea catalogue open mentally redecorating my room. Sketching it out and making notes with a measuring tape close at hand.. yeah. Then I find myself on the computer, on the Ikea site looking for things that I need to fit my mental image and jotting things down and now I am on here blogging about it all. How lovely!
Well here is my quick crap perspective drawing of the western wall of my room.

Yeah I want to go to Ikea to FINALLY get my room all fixed up before I start uni. I have been wanting to redecorate for WAY too long now and have had a similar idea and layout for my room for quite some time now. So hopefully within the next month I can get that all sorted.

I also want to go to Ikea really just for the sake of going because Ikea is fun and awesome and I can mentally design and construct and decorate my future home. I really can't wait till I am able to do that in reality. After I get a career I love and am going to start a family and have the money to build my dream home. *daydreaming about future house.. *

I also want an AWESOME tree house in my big backyard. Hopefully as cool as this one at Tree House Point.

That would be fun... and now I reinstate the title of this post 'Where time takes us...'. I was only meant to be posting about my bedroom plans but apparently not. But this will be the end!
